How to Request Title IX Investigation Records

Title IX investigations at schools and universities involve sensitive records, but much of the institutional response data is obtainable through public records requests (for public institutions) or Clery Act requests (for any institution receiving federal funding).

What You Can Request

  • Clery Act statistics: Crime statistics that all colleges must publish
  • Investigation outcome summaries: Findings and sanctions (redacted for privacy)
  • Title IX policies and procedures: How the institution handles complaints
  • Training materials: What Title IX coordinators and investigators are taught
  • Institutional response records: Communications about policy changes following incidents
  • Sample Request Language

I am requesting all records related to Title IX investigations conducted by [INSTITUTION] for the period of [START DATE] to [END DATE], including the number of complaints filed, investigation outcomes, sanctions imposed, and any appeals. Please redact personally identifying information of complainants and respondents as required by FERPA.

    Important Notes

  • FERPA protects student records, but aggregate data and institutional response records are generally not protected
  • Public universities are subject to state public records laws
  • Private universities receiving federal funds must comply with Clery Act disclosure requirements
